bullet  General Notes:

Could "Hester" be the same as "Olive B. Mershon"? Only the name Hester and not Olive appears on the 1870 census.

However, on the 1880 census, only the name Olive appears and Hester's can not be found.

Hester's age was given as 2 months meaning that she was born in 1870. Olive's age was given as 9 which means she probably was born in 1870 or 1871.

The 1885 Iowa State census shows Olive's age to be 15 which means she was probably born in 1870.

If one were to assume that Hester and Olive were the same person then that means that she was born around June of 1870, as per the 1870 census. The 1880 census which was probably conducted shortly before her birth date would account for her age as being only 9. The 1885 census could have been conducted just after her birth date which would account for her age as being 15.

If one were to assume that Hester and Olive were NOT the same person then that means that Hester was born around June of 1870, as per the 1870 census, and died before the 1880 census. Olive could have been born as early as June of 1871 which would account for her age of 9 on the 1880 census if it were conducted before her birth date. Even if the 1885 census were not conducted until late in December of 1884, her age still should have only been 14 instead of the 15 reported but an error of only one year is not uncommon.

Based solely on the ages, I suspect that they are the same person but I can not understand how the name Hester appears instead of Olive, or Ollie, or Oley, etc.
