NOTE - Minnie Haws (Hawes) was no doubt related to Susan Arnspiger in some manner but I have yet to place her with any particular family. (Brian L. Lightfoot)

This 1870 census record is extremely troubling in that nearly all of the birth dates and ages don't match up with known birth dates. The son, William, is missing from the list when he would have been only 4 years old at the time. And finally, the name John appears on the list with a supposed birth year of about 1866 when he actually wasn't born until 1873 which was 3 years after this census!

It could be possible for the ages of the children to have been supplied by a well-meaning neighbor when neither parent or responsible adult could be located by the enumerator. This seems plausible because no middle names or initials were supplied. This could also account for the name of William just being overlooked. But I am still perplexed as to how the name of John made the list. Could it be possible that John was actually born about 1866 and that all the other records are wrong? But if this were true, then his birth with seem to conflict with that of William. Or is it possible that the well meaning neighbor mixed up the name of William with John, thus the reason for the absence of the name William?

NOTE - At this time the two oldest sons, Frank and George, were living with their aunt, Margaret Arnspiger, who was already married to Robert Mountjoy, back in Logan County, Illinois. The brothers would not be reunited with the family until around 1890 in Nebraska.
.

bullet  Marriage Notes:

The two oldest brothers, Francis and George, remained in Logan County when the family moved from Logan County just over one hundred miles east to Champaign County around 1872. They would both later move to Nebraska probably to join their parents and other siblings there.

I have yet to determine just when the parents moved from Champaign County, Illinois to Nebraska but it was some time after 1880, probably around 1884-1885. It may be that one or more of the children set out for Nebraska ahead of time with some others eventually joining. The parents then could have spent their final years living with one of the children. On the other hand, it may be that while the children were still relatively young, the parents could have moved there as a family. Only the missing 1890 census data would be the definitive key.

The marriages of at least two of the daughters suggest that because of their young ages at the time of the marriage, I find it doubtful that they would have already left their parents but rather were probably living with the parents when they courted and married their spouses in Nebraska. For example, Dora, who was just over the age of 18, was married on 01 Sep 1886 in Hall County, Nebraska and within another year, moved again to Kansas. Margaret was not quite 17 when she married on 15 Mar 1888 in Perkins County, Nebraska. She returned to Logan County, Illinois by 1891 where her first two children we re born.

The son George was married in Logan County in 1887 and by 1888 had moved to Hall County, Nebraska. Within two years, he moved again to Perkins County, Nebraska. Another son, William, was married in Perkins County on 3 Dec 1891. The oldest son, Francis Henry, was married in Perkins County, Nebraska on 13 Oct 1892.

John Jr. apparently remained in Illinois his entire life farming mostly in the Logan County area. Ollie Myrtle apparently remained in Illinois where she was married in Logan County on 1 Feb 1903.
