4 Gilbert L. "Gib" Renton, 88, of 3415 Pierce Ave., Marinette passed away Monday, Sept. 5 at Bay Area Medical Center, Marinette. Born Nov. 25, 1922 in Loomis to Ernest and Anna (Stieg) Renton, he graduated from Marinette High School in 1941, where he was active in golf and safety patrol. He was a championship varsity golfer at Marinette High School and maintained a lifelong love for playing golf, bowling, softball and playing cards.
After graduation he was employed by Foote Brothers Gear & Machine in Chicago, Ill. A World War II veteran, he enlisted in service on April 24, 1944. He was a rifleman in the United States Army, later serving as a Staff Sergeant in Casenta, Italy and for 13 months was a teletype operator with the Signal Corps in Italy, prior to discharge on July 12, 1946. He was married to the former Lorraine M. Schmidt on Nov. 23, 1946 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Marinette by Pastor A. A. Gentz. He worked at the former Prescott Co. in Menominee for two years and at the Ansul Co. for 32 years. When SpecialtyChem bought the Chemical Division, he continued doing his same job as supervisor of operations. For seven years, he was an active member of the original Ansul Rescue Squad. He was also an avid softball player, golfer and bowler and was inducted into the Tri-City Bowling Hall of Fame in April of 1997.
He was a member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, where he served as an usher, a member of the Board of Finance and had served on the Church Council, School Board and Building and Grounds Committee. He was also a member of Little River Country Club, M & M Sportsmen, Bay Area Medical Center Auxiliary and Menominee American Legion Post 146.
He is survived by his wife of over 64 years, Lorraine; two daughters, Sharon (Mike) Rupert and Sue (Wayne) Conner, both of Marinette; a son, Steven (Lori) Renton of Scappoose, Ore.; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; six step-grandchildren and a sister-in-law, Jane Schmidt of Peshtigo. He is further survived by three godchildren and nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Sandra Renton; his parents; a sister, Caroline Woods; a brother, Kenneth Renton; his father and mother-in-law, Henry and Minnie Schmidt and a brother-in-law, Donald Schmidt.
Friends may call at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Marinette after 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 10. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday in the church with Rev. Jon Tesch and Rev. Frederick Mueller officiating. Pallbearers will be grandsons, Jason Schaefer, Jesse Adams, Gary Malmstadt, Jim Rastall, Zachary Milbach and Dylan DeMille. Military honors will follow the church service with burial in Forest Home Cemetery. Hansen-Onion-Martell Funeral Home, Marinette is serving the family.
