1 Mrs. Effie Adeline "Gackie" Magaha Lawyer, 78, of 411 E. Main St. Thurmont, died Thursday, Oct. 3, at the Frederick Health Care Center.
She was the wife of the late Tolbert Fike Lawyer, who died in January 1969.
Born July 4, 1913, in Crookston, Minn., she was a daughter of the late John William Hilleary and Lucy May Sulcer Magaha.
Mrs. Lawyer taught elementary school at Forest Elementary near Myersville and the Thurmont Elementary School for 44 years, retiring in 1978.
She was an active, lifelong member of the Thurmont Church of the Brethren. She attended Towson State Normal School and graduated from the University of Maryland with a bachelor's and master's degree in education.
She was a member of the county, state and national teachers association, the Thurmont Senior Citizens and Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority.
She is survived by her son, Calvin Lawyer of Wabash, Ind; three grandchildren, Jonathan Lawyer, Venita Lawyer and Nathan Lawyer; a great-grandson, Christopher Brown; and one sister, Dora Mildred Magaha of Thurmont.
Mrs. Lawyer is at the Thurmont Funeral Home of Robert E. Dailey and Son, 615 E. Main St., where the family will receive friends on Friday, Oct. 4, from 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 5, at the funeral home with her pastor, the Rev. Linda Lambert, officiating.
Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Frederick.
