bullet  General Notes:

WHO WAS L. P. LIGHTFOOT?

FIGURING OUT THE GENDER
The first problem to overcome is that the transcription and index for the 1880 census shows L. P. Lightfoot to be a son. Apparently the actual census image shows this as a daughter so there is an error in the index for the 1880 census. Even still, the use of only initials by a female would be unusual because usually only males tended to utilize initials instead of their given names. Females tended to use their full given names.

It can also be confirmed that L. P. Lightfoot had to be a daughter by examining the obituaries for the father and for the mother. The obituary for his/her father, Thomas Jefferson Lightfoot, who died on 15 Mar 1917, indicates that Thomas had 11 children of which 9 still survived. Those numbers agree with the data that I have however the obituary lists 4 married daughters while I list only 3 daughters and the elusive gender of L. P. Lightfoot. One daughter's name on the father's obituary in 1917 was "Mrs. L. H. Vaughn, Keokuk, Iowa" and as "Mrs. L. M. Hahn" on the mother's obituary in 1929. All of the children's names in the father's obituary seem to be listed chronologically and the name of "Mrs. L. H. Vaughn, Keokuk, Iowa" was listed first, suggesting that this was "L. P. Lightfoot".

FIGURING OUT THE FULL NAME
I've searched many records trying to find the full given name for L. P. Lightfoot and have come up empty-handed each time. There seems to be no mention of her using only those initials beyond the 1880 census but she appears to have lived past the 1900 census because her mother indicates that she still had 10 children living which would include her.

Only the 1900, 1910, and 1920 census records in Iowa discussed below as well as a marriage license record in Iowa for her daughter show the full name of L. P. Lightfoot.

FIGURING OUT THE FIRST MARRIAGE
The following is an intriguing 1915 marriage record from Lee County, Iowa which is the location where Dorothy Preston, daughter of Daisy Lightfoot, is found in the 1920 US Census to be living with Lewis Hahn and Louie Hahn, who is actually Louie P. Lightfoot.

Name: Ralph Andrew Leake
Event Date: 27 Dec 1915
Event Place: Lee, Iowa, United States
Spouse's Name: Opel Maude Peck
Spouse's Father's Name: Jacob Reiseltz Peck
Spouse's Mother's Name: Louie Pearl Lightfoot

So what we have here is a fact that Opel Peck was a daughter of Louie Pearl Lightfoot. And since this event was occurring in the same Lee County, Iowa where Louie was later caring for the orphaned daughter of her sister, Daisy, it is easy to conclude that Louie P. Lightfoot was first married to a Jacob Peck. A check of the 1900 and 1910 Census records shows just that. Jacob and Louie probably were married in Missouri about 1892 and moved to Iowa by 1900 where they appeared in the 1900 and 1910 census.

There was another daughter married in Iowa in 1913 named Mabel Peck but unfortunately the name of Louie Lightfoot must be indistinct on the application because the index of that record only shows it to be:

Spouse's Father's Name: Jake R Peck
Spouse's Mother's Name: L?N? L Lightfoot

Louie Pearl Lightfoot was then was remarried to L. H. Hahn sometime between 1910 and 1920. They appeared in the 1920 census caring for her orphaned niece, Dorothy Preston. Louie's name then appeared in the 1929 obituary for her mother, apparently still married to L. H. Hahn. Additionally, they appear together in the 1930 Census.

FIGURING OUT A SECOND MARRIAGE RECORD
The 1920 census records of Keokuk, Lee County, Iowa shows a Lewis Hahn and wife named Louie Hahn. The age of the wife matches that of the "L. P. Lightfoot" given in the 1880 census and the birth location of Missouri is also a match. The name Hahn is the surname given in the obituary for her mother in 1929. The father's obituary was close but misspelled it as Vaughn.

Additionally, Lewis and Louie Hahn have living with them in 1920 a 3 year old girl named Dorothy Preston, born in Missouri. Another sister of "L. P." named Daisy Lightfoot was married to Ray Preston in Carrollton, Missouri but it appears that Daisy died before 1920 because when the mother died 12 years later in 1929, the name of "Mrs. Roy Preston" was not listed as one of the surviving children and the count of those that predeceased their parents had gone up from 3 to 4.

FINAL CONCLUSION
L. P. Lightfoot was Louie Pearl Lightfoot who was married twice and had two daughters, Mabel and Opel. This was a difficult genealogical puzzle to figure out especially when there seems to be no marriage document for either of Louie's marriages. Only the census records of her two marriages, her daughter's marriage records, and her mother's obituary could put it all together.

Was Jacob Reiseltz Peck, the first husband of Louis, somehow related to her own mother, Emma Jane Peck? More research on that is needed but the 1900 census does state that he was born in Illinois and not Missouri.
