bullet  General Notes:

Family Stories from My Mother, Susan Ida Wymer-Sharer-Fisher, by Iris Geraldine Sharer

I was born September 21, 1887 in Cedar County, Iowa between Springdale and Rochester, Iowa. The home site was in a wooded area of ten acres. There were eleven children born to my mother and father (James Wymer, Jr. and Eunice Arnsberger Lightfoot). Two children, Edward and John (Johnie) died when small children.

We had lots of fun playing in those ten acres, picked berries and nuts in season and sold them. We thought we were rich if we had a dollar. We walked a mile to school which was a one room red brick building with a small cloak room to put our coats and boots. We walked winter and summer; in the winter we waded in the snow up to our knees, and walked on the fence posts the snow was so deep.

We would go to Tipton or West Liberty, Iowa to buy clothes and shoes in a horse and buggy or a buckboard wagon. One of my pleasures was to get a sack of candy for a dime, such as peppermint sticks, etc. When we went to the grocery store at Springdale, the man would always give us a treat. On our way home Mother had purchased cheese, bread, and meat, so we could stop in the shade and have a little picnic.

We always had a big garden and we had to weed, the job being up to we children. Then we helped Mother to can all the produce from the garden, washing all the jars. I also helped her with the washing every Monday. She would go out to help families that needed extra help and she would be paid a dollar a day with her meals. I was left in charge of the house and looked (over) George and Elizabeth. The rest of the children were working away from home or were married and homes of their own.

My mother was a good cook. We picked elderberries and wild grapes, making preserves and pies. Mother was known all over the neighborhood for her pie making. Whenever there was an event or thrashers, they would ask Mrs. Wymer to make the pies. One of her specialties was vinegar pie, better than lemon.

During the hard times when money was so scarce, my mother sold her long hair to a woman who wanted a switch (they wore extra hair piled on top of their own hair) for a barrel of flour. Once there was a fire on the roof, and mother was alone with us children. She climbed a ladder and using her best quilts beat out the fire. Also when there was a bad storm in the night, she would make us get dressed and come down stairs until the storm was over.

I sewed carpet rags and made quilt blocks and mother set them together on the sewing machine. Some of the relatives lived near us and we would visit back and forth. They were cousins, the Mackies and the Linns. They are buried in the Pee Dee Cemetery near West Branch, Iowa. We lived in a Quaker settlement. My grandparents, Daniel Lightfoot, Sr., were English Quakers, his mother and father coming from England before 1811.

My mother when she was a little girl of six came to Cedar County in a covered wagon and carriage conveyance. She could remember most of the trip from her memory and stories from her parents. They located upon one of the fertile farms of that new country.
