bullet  General Notes:

Daniel was married for a short time prior to his marriage to Vietta Wymer. There is a record of a marriage between Daniel D. Doty, Jr and Nettie Norris (Mary J. Norris) in Tipton, Cedar County, Iowa on 28 Apr 1884.

However, the 1885 Iowa State census shows Daniel living with an elderly "Catharine Barkhurst" who was either his mother probably remarried and widowed again, or his mother-in-law who was widowed and using her maiden name. The marriage license between Daniel Doty and Nettie Morris shows her mother's name to be Jane Backhurst. Daniel was shown as married on the 1885 Iowa Census but there is no Nettie or Mary J. Norris-Doty living with him.

The mystery surrounding the series of horse poisonings which occurred in Cedar county a few years ago is about to be cleared up. Dan Doty has arrested at Enid, Okla., and has made a partial confession. It will be remembers that thirteen valuable horses were poisoned and one man, Wm. Lightfoot served a jail sentence of several months for complicity. The case attracted much attention here at the time, many of the parties being well known.

NOTE - Daniel Doty was married to Vietta Wymer, a niece of William Lightfoot.

bullet  Noted events in his life were:

• He has alternate birth information of 1857.
I strongly suspect that the birth year of 1857 on his gravestone is not correct.

The 1910 census shows his age which equates to a birth year of about 1857. This is the only record which supports that birth year.

The 1900 census record provides a birth date of Nov 1861.

The 1885 Iowa State Census shows Daniel living with his widowed mother and older brother, Charles. His age of 23 would give a birth year of about 1861 or 1862.

Daniel is found in the 1870 census with what is presumably his widowed mother, Catherine, living in Iowa Township, Cedar County, Iowa. On that record, his age is 8 which would fit with the Nov 1861 birth date.

The 1860 Census shows his parents living in Cedar County, Iowa with 4 children: Mary, Charles, Christian, and James. Note that Daniel's name was not included therefore he was born after 1860.

• He was buried after 8 March 1915 in the Del Norte Cemetery in Drummond, OK.

Daniel and his wife, Etta, share one common gravestone which is a large block of rose colored granite. On the polished front vertical face, the inscription reads "DOTY - Daniel D. 1857 - 1915; Etta E. 1868 - 1945".

• His obituary was published in the Messenger on 11 March 1915 in Drummond, OK.

5 It is not often that Drummond has to mourn the loss of two of its old residents in one week.

D. D. Doty, who has lived here with his family for the past 16 years, coming from Cedar County, Iowa, and who has been very low with paralysis for the past weeks, quietly passed away, Monday night, at 11:30 at his home, four miles west of town. His death was not unexpected. He was 58 years, 4 months and 2 days old and had been confined to the house and practically helpless for several years.

Before that he was one of our most progressive farmers and unusually skillful mechanic.

He leaves a wife and two grown daughters, Misses Wilma and Zoe to mourn his loss. He was an indulgent husband and kind father.

His funeral occurred at his home, Wednesday P.M. at 2 o'clock, Rev. Virgil Brown officiating. The interment was in Del Norte cemetery. His family have the sincere sympathy of all in this hour of their deep affliction.
