bullet  General Notes:

Richard Malden, the eldest son of Jonathan Rex Fast and Elizabeth Ann Moran, was born in Monongalia County, Virginia, 23 Mar 1835. He grew to manhood on his father's farm. In 1860 he was married to Sarah Ellen Doolittle, daughter of Thomas Doolittle and Sarah McCausland, of Forksburgh, Virginia, who died in 1906, aged 66 years.

At the beginning of the Civil War, Richard Malden Fast served the Union by procuring horses for the use of the army, his headquarters being at Grafton. Later when the 17th West Virginia Infantry was formed, he enlisted in Company F and served as a drummer until the close of the war. He then returned to Lick Run where he engaged in farming until 1885, when after selling his land, he moved to Colfax, Nebraska. Here he bought a farm mostly of unbroken prairie land, broke the sod, and erected buildings, and improved the soil. In 1895 a railroad having been built near his farm, he sold his land at a considerable profit and returned to the East where he took up his residence in Fairchance, Fayette County, Pennsylvania, a town situated within ten miles of the old Jacob's Lutheran Cemetery in which are the graves of his great-grandparents, Nicklaus and his wife, Cadarina. He served the borough of Fairchance as its burgess. He was a Republican in politics and was an active member of the Christian Church since early in life.

Richard Malden Fast survived his wife seventeen years, during which time he made his home with his son, Dr. Ephriam Burneldo Fast in Fairchance. On 28 Sep 1923, he died in his eighty-ninth year. He and his wife are buried in Maple Grove Cemetery, Fairchance, Fayette County, Pennsylvania.
