bullet  General Notes:

From Jane Heim:
Ervin Henry Spencer, son of Henry and Margaret Ann (Wymer) Spencer, was born on September 12, 1889, near Rochester, Iowa. On November 21, 1911, he was married to Minnie Andre at the Methodist parsonage in Mechanicsville, Iowa. They farmed for a short time in Solon, Iowa, then in Lisbon. Will Andre (father of Minnie) purchased the Joe Boyd farm of sixty-six acres, three miles north of Mechanicsville, including machinery, stock and crops where Ervin and Minnie moved on August 2, 1923. where they spent the rest of their married life, remaining on the farm after he retired in 1957. He loved to go fishing. He died of cancer, September 7, 1960, at Saint Luke's Hospital, Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Services were held at the Methodist Church, Mechanicsville with Rev. Eugene Miller officiating. Interment was in the Andre Cemetery, Lisbon.

[My comments: He was a warm hearted man who had a way with fussy grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He took them in his arms, sat in his rocking chair and rocked them, humming in a deep soothing voice, and soon they were quieted and happy and often sound asleep. My grandfather was a wonderful man and very loving to me; used to make me doll furniture from peach crates. I stayed with them most of my childhood summers and when we would drive into town in their old Whippet on Wednesday nights for band concert and Saturday nights for grocery shopping he would hum all the way in and back. He used to hum and rock me to sleep until of an age my feet hung on the floor, then carry me up to my bed.]

bullet  Marriage Notes:

"A very quiet wedding took place Tuesday evening of last week at the Methodist parsonage in Mechanicsville, the contracting parties being Miss Minnie Andre, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. William Andre who reside east of here, and Mr. Irvin Spencer of Rochester, Iowa, Rev. Bally officiating. The wedding took place at eight o'clock. This came as a great surprise to Miss Andre's many friends as they had not heard the least rumor of it before hand and they were quite profuse with their congratulations when they learned of the event."
