Minister to observe 101st birthday. Joseph A. Darner, will celebrate his 101st birthday Sunday with a family gathering at his home in Ottumwa, IA.
A few weeks ago he was too ill to get out of bed but has since recovered and now gets up for every meal, says his daughter Arletta. He was born 19 Dec 1886, in Wapello County, Iowa, the son of Frank W. and Clara T. Darner, oldest of 11 children; graduate of Ottumwa High School, 1906; was Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Grinnell College, 1916; and was accepted as a candidate for the Methodist Ministry; and attended Union Theological Seminar in New York City. In 1911 was ordained an evangelist of the Church of God in Christ which later became a part of the Assemblies of God. He is a charter member of the First Church of the Open Bible in Ottumwa and a custodian there until he retired at age 89. He is the oldest living Minster in the US holding credentials with the Open Bible Standard Church, Arletta says. He and his wife Rose Eldridge Darner, 6 children, including Arletta and Alvin of Ottumwa.

13 Rev. Joseph A. Darner, 101, of 220 North Birch died at 6:45 PM, 2 Jan 1988, at home, born 19 Dec 1886, Highland Township, Wapello County, Iowa, the son of Frances Darner and Clara Theresa Kielkopf; wife Rose Z. Eldridge, married 7 Jun 1922, Des Moines, IA; she died 2 Apr 1936.
He is survived by 3 sons, George, Robert and Alvin, daughter Arletta Rose, a brother Paul and a sister Mamie E. Bailey; preceded in death by daughter Elaine Louise Darner.
He was active in the early Pentecostal movement and ministry in KY, IL, MN & IA. He and his father in 1911 built a tabernacle which was used to hold the first Pentecostal meeting in Ottumwa, serving as pastor. From 1922 to 1933 he was an associate with Lottioe Peters in the Sherman Street Pentecostal Divisions. In 1934 he became a charter member of the 1st Church of the Open Bible. He was associated with F. W. Darner in an Ottumwa Wallpaper Store; taught school in Copperhead County School in Green Township and then in Shiloh School, south of Fremont, IA in Mahaska County.
For several years he was in business for himself as a wallpaper hanger and painter; was employed as custodian of the First Church of the Open Bible until he retired at the age of 89 to help care for
his wife.
