General Notes:
(Source: Family Tree Maker WFT 701, Vol. 1, Ed. 1, Tree #1276 submitted by Dorothy Danner)
Frederick Miller, was born near Hanover, Pennsylvania, in 1822. Made an orphan very early in life, he grew up under the care of a family named Toms, of Middletown, Maryland, receiving a good education. After he was grown, he lived for some time with the Routzahn family of Jefferson district (in Frederick County).
He then began business for himself by renting several farms in succession; the last of these was the Routzahn farm, which he cultivated for about sixteen years; then -- about thirty-six years ago -- he bought the farm known as "Mahogany Heights," from the Lynch family; this farm he sold to his eldest son, Charles William, about 1885.
Frederick Miller was enterprising and resourceful, and met with much success. At one time, he owned and drove wagons for transportation to Baltimore. At the time of his death, he was the owner of several farms -- two in Montgomery, Maryland, one in Shenandoah, Virginia, one in Loudoun, Virginia, and another at Catoctin. He was also a partner in the Buckeystown flour mill, owning it in equal shares with William H. Lakin of Jefferson.
Mr. Miller lost some fine horses during the civil war, which were taken by General Early's cavalry.
Frederick Miller was married in 1846 to Lydia, daughter of John Dorner, of the vicinity of Middletown. They had 5 (possibly 7) children. Mrs. Lydia Miller died in 1874; Mr. Miller afterwards married Miss Susan Charlton. Their children are 1, Henry of Washington, D.C., who married a Miss Reed; 2, Gertrude (Mrs. Gartner) residing in Montgomery, Maryland.
Mr. Frederick Miller died in Montgomery County, Maryland in 1904. He was a democrat and a member of the Lutheran church. ----------------------------------------

NOTE - Frederick's birth location was believed to be Pennsylvania instead of Maryland. If his birth date was 28 Feb 1822, then his age should have been 28 instead of 27. .

NOTE - Susan Charlton was Frederick's second wife. His first wife, Lydia Ann Darner, had died in 1874. Walter Rice was the son of Sarah Miller, a daughter of Frederick's and her first husband. Sarah was widowed and had remarried. Her father and step-mother were raising Walter. -------------------------------------- .

NOTE - I remained somewhat confused by the names in this census. Lacking the exact relationship information and knowing that generally, but not always, the enumerators would list children from a previous marriage after the children of the current marriage, it would seem that the young Sarah Miller at age 1 may have been a child from a previous marriage of Frederick's based on her being listed after an older child. But Sarah's age is only 1 so that suggests she is a child of the current marriage.
Listed in between Sarah and George is Elizabeth Haller, whom I have no idea of her relationship.
George W. Miller at age 2 listed at age 2 on the 1850 census must be a child of Lydia's yet no researcher lists the name of George as one of her children. To confuse matters even more, almost all researchers show a child named Charles William Miller born in 1847 making him a son of Lydia's and who would have been about 2 years old at the time of this 1850 census matching the age of the George that was listed. The census image clearly shows the name George and not Charles. How or why did the name of George eventually become Charles? ----------------------------------------- .

Marriage Notes:
The marriage index shows their names as Frederick Miller and Lydia Ann Danner. This record can be found at the County Courthouse Frederick, Maryland & Family History Library, Salt Lake City, UT, Film # 0014082. --------------------------------------
Most researchers agree on a total of 5 children being born to Frederick and Lydia. However, some show a John Miller and not Anna Miller. Anna's name is clearly shown with the family as a daughter on the 1880 census. -----------------------------------------
