bullet  General Notes:

Whether his surname should be spelled HANSEN or HANSON seems to be a matter of his own personal preference. Apparently it was spelled HANSEN during his younger years to coincide with the spelling of his father's name. By the late 1890s, most of his siblings had already "Americanized" the spelling to HANSON. The gravestone of his mother is spelled as HANSEN but his own gravestone is spelled HANSON.

During his adult life in America, he went by the name of "Louis" instead of Lars. The spelling as "Lewis" generally occurs on census records before he was married. Years after his death, his family members purchased a gravestone but spelled his name as "Lewis Hanson". Once again the spelling of "Louis" seems to be a matter of personal preference but most family members and documents spell it as Louis instead of Lewis. In addition, his son Harry, was given a middle name of Louis which would seem to indicate that the spelling on the gravestone should have been Louis instead of Lewis.

In addition to the non-preferred spelling of Lewis, his gravestone also gives the incorrect birth year of 1858 instead of 1855. But even this may be a matter of which document one goes by to determine his exact year of birth. Only the census records from before his marriage indicate his true year of birth as 1855. Afterwards, his age seem to vary on each and every subsequent census record.
