bullet  General Notes:

The following information comes from the manuscript "By Way of Rotterdam" authored by Wirt Gerry Faust, a copy of which is in the possession of Robert G. Fast, 2309 Jonathon's Landing, Ft. Wayne, Indiana 46804. Published 1952, reprinted 1983; pages 47, 50, 51, 53, 85:

Jonathan Wesley Faust was the 2nd son of Jonathan Rex Fast and Elizabeth Ann Moran. He was born on the Big Lick Run farm on 9 Aug 1841, now in Marion County, West Virginia. The farm contained 300 acres, and there he and his brothers and sisters grew up. At the age of sixteen years he united with the Mt. Nebo Christian Church whose minister was the Rev. Mr. Finley Oaks. Later, he was appointed to the office of Elder of the church.

In 1861, answering the first call of President Lincoln for volunteers in the in the Union Army for the Civil War, he enlisted at Palatine, Virginia, now a part of the city of Fairmont, West Virginia, in Company C, 6th Virginia Infantry, which organization became Captain Thomas Maulsby's Independent Battery, Virginia Light Artillery. He was mustered in at Fairmont on 31 Dec 1861 as a private and was honorably discharged from the service on 27 Sept 1864 at Wheeling as a private in Battery F, First West Virginia Light Artillery. On 24 July 1864, in the battle at Carter's Farm, Winchester, Virginia, he was wounded by a shot in the shoulder; the effects remained with him. On this occasion, having been thrown from his horse and left behind by the disorganized retreating army, he was found and ministered to by a comrade, Sergeant Thomas Nelson Swisher, who, placing him upon a horse, rode with him to a nearby farmhouse where rest and food and comfortable lodging were secured for the night.

Soon after his army discharge he entered the McNeely Normal School, Hopedale, Ohio, remaining a student there for two years. In 1868, after a few terms of teaching, he enrolled in the West Virginia Agricultural College at Morgantown which later became a part of the State University. On Christmas Day 1870, he was married to Helen Matilda CARTER, who was born 28 Nov 1844, and died 2 Dec 1905. They went to housekeeping on a farm purchased near Boothsville, Marion County, West Virginia.
