A man who fell dead on the sidewalk at 2 o'clock Friday afternoon near the intersection of court and Patrick streets was identified last night as Z. Preston Darner, aged 70, formerly of Jefferson. After collapsing with a heart attack, he was rushed to Frederick Memorial Hospital in the United Ambulance, but was declared dead on arrival at the hospital five minutes later.
Mr. Darner, formerly of Jefferson, has been residing at the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. And Mrs. John W. Wiles, near this city. Although he had been in ill health, his death was very unexpected. He was the son of the late John S. W. and Sarah Frances Werking Darner and attended Saint Paul's Evangelical Lutheran church, Jefferson. Mr. Darner was a member of Jefferson council 129, Jr. O.U.A.M. and for a number of years he had been employed by the Hagerstown and Frederick Railroad. Later at the Frederick Iron & Steel Company where he was forced to retire due to ill health. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Wiles, one sister, Mrs. Harry C. Summers, Jefferson, one granddaughter, Mrs. A. Wayne Gift, Chambersburg, Pennsylvania. Two great granddaughters also survive. Funeral services for Z. Preston Darner, near this city who died Friday afternoon were held at the funeral home, 106 East Church Street, Monday morning at 11 o'clock. Rev. Eugene W. Young, pastor of Saint Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Jefferson, officiated. Homer C. Gross, conducted services at the grave for Jefferson council 129, Jr. O.U.A.M. of which the deceased was a member. Mr. Darner was also a member of Frederick Aerie 1067 Fraternal Order of Eagles. Pallbearers, members of the Jefferson council were Norman S. Remsburg, Oscar Smith, Homer Smith, Wade Tucker, Wilbur Gordon and George Wright. Interment was in Saint Paul's Lutheran Cemetery, Jefferson. Mr. Etchison and son, funeral directors.
