  General Notes:

Mahoning County, Ohio was formed in Feb 1846, from Columbiana and Trumbull Counties. The two upper tiers of townships, taken from Trumbull County, include: Austintown, Berlin, Boardman, Canfield, Coitsville, Ellsworth, Jackson, Milton, Poland and Youngstown. The lower tier of townships, taken from Columbiana County, includes: Beaver, Goshen, Green, Smith and Springfield.

"Joshua bowman, son of Philip Casper and Katy Bowman was born in Fayette County, Pennsylvania, March 9, 1787. He came to Ohio when a young man with his parents in 1806. Joshua Bowman married Mary Reed of Canfield about 1812. She was born December 15, 1793. They located upon a part of section six, Green Township, Columbiana County (now a part of Mahoning county, Ohio). For many years they conducted a tavern. Joshua Bowman died April 16, 1860, aged 73 years. Mary Reed Bowman died September 20, 1883, aged 90 years. They were both buried in a private graveyard in the orchard on their farm. They raised a family of eight children as follows:

  Death Notes:

A death date of 16 Apr 1860 would certainly seem to be incorrect given that his name appeared on the 1860 census as of 1 June 1860. Apparently this date of 16 Apr 1860 comes from a widely circulated photograph of a gravestone for Joshua Bowman which gives that date. However, a close look at the photo reveals that his age, which should have been about 73 years, more closely resembles 83 years or perhaps even 33 years. This might suggest that the gravestone was for a different Joshua Bowman.

NOTE - This is assumed to be Joshua Bowman, the husband, even though the name and age don't match. It is assumed to be a gross error by the enumerator.

• He was buried after 16 April 1860 in the New Albany Cemetery (Defunct) in New Albany, OH.

The above tombstone is the only one known to have survived when the New Albany Cemetery was destroyed. It was kept in the barn of Mr. Redinger and later taken to a dump and retrieved by Mr. Roland Smith (who grew up in New Albany). He now has it laying face down in front of a side door to his garage. The other tombstones were used as a sidewalk around the New Albany Hotel, when it burnt down in 1938 everything was leveled out for rebuilding later. The cemetery was plowed over and another orchard planted.

NOTE - Because the name on this census is shown as "Joseph", I'm not sure if this was actually Joshua Bowman, the husband. And because the 1850 Census did not provide relationships, it is difficult to discern the exact relationship but Joshua's age should have been about 63 instead of the 43 which is clearly shown on the image. I have no idea who else it could have been with this name and age so I can only assume that it was a gross error on the part of the enumerator in getting the wrong name and the wrong age.
