There is a Find-A-Grave page for a Thomas H. Methvin (http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=87113230) that records his birth in 1854, death on 22 Sep 1931, and burial at the Oregon State Hospital Cemetery in Salem, Marion County, Oregon. The Oregon State Hospital is the custodian of the cremated remains of almost 3,500 people who died from 1914 to 1970 while living at the following state facilities:
• Oregon State Hospital, Salem, OR
• Oregon State Tuberculosis Hospital, Salem, OR
• Mid-Columbia Hospital, Oregon
• Dammasch State Hospital, Wilsonville, OR
• Oregon State Penitentiary, Salem, OR
• Fairview Training Center, Salem, OR
The cremated remains of these people have never claimed by their families. At one time the hospital had a memorial fountain with underground vaults that served as a columbarium for the cremains. After a few years water damage and leaks forced the hospital to remove the metal containers. As of 2012, all remnants of the memorial fountain no longer exist.
As part of the hospital's continuous improvement project, a new patient memorial is currently slated to open sometime in 2012. The new memorial will honor these people as well as house their cremains. The State of Oregon still views themselves as a temporary caretaker for the cremains. The hope is that all of the cremains will be claimed by family. Although the birth dates are very close, and the death dates exactly as submitted by researchers Tom Methvin and Jack Moselle, the death location was supposedly in Cheney, Spokane County, Washington and not anywhere near the Oregon facilities of the Oregon State Hospital. Thus, it remains unsure it this is the same Thomas Methven.

In 1880 Thomas and Alice were operating a farm in Stately Township, Brown County, Minnesota. They had 20 acres of improved-tilled land with 140 acres of unimproved land. They harvested oats, corn and wheat having 2 horses and 1 milk cow. By 1900 they had sold the land and relocated to Cheney, Spokane County, Washington where he continued to farm. By 1920, both Thomas and Alice had retired and were living in Whitman County, Washington without their children.
