GALESVILLE '97 Dorothy A. Smith of Galesville passed away Monday, June 1, 2015, at Gundersen Health System in La Crosse. She had only been in a hospital nine other times, when she gave birth to her children.

Dorothy was born Aug. 7, 1924, to Hubert and Olive Drugan. She was raised in Trempealeau and graduated from Trempealeau High School. Dorothy married Brookes Smith Oct. 17, 1945, at St. Bartholomew Catholic Church in Trempealeau. Their marriage was blessed by nine children: Patricia Eichman (Gerald), Barbara Jacobson (deceased) (Kent), Kathleen Kujak, Bonnie Truax (William), Mary Schubert (Ray, deceased), Rebecca Harris (Robert), Sandra Salsman (David), Michael Smith (Nancy) and Daniel Smith (Paula); 27 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband of 69 years; eight children; sisters, Gen Rogness, Evelyn Jessessky and Loretta (Duane) Johnson; and sister-in-law, Helen Drugan.

She was preceded in death by her brothers, Hubert, James and Leo Drugan; sisters, Elizabeth Hammond and Catherine Drugan; and brothers-in-law, Robert Hammond, Jim Rogness and Louis Jessessky.

Mom always had coffee and treats ready. She made everyone feel welcome and loved having such a large family. She would proudly tell everyone she had seven daughters first and then two sons. She will be missed by all of us, she was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 4, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Galesville, with Father Woodrow Pace officiating. Burial will follow in Pine Cliff Cemetery. Her grandchildren will serve as pallbearers. Friends may call prior to the service from noon to 2 p.m. at the church. Assisting the family is Zwickey Funeral Homes, Galesville Chapel.

Brookes & Dorothy Smith, Galesville, Wis. celebrated their 60th anniversary Oct. 17. They were married at St. Bartholomew's Catholic Church in Trempealeau, Wisconsin in 1945.

They have nine children: Patricia (Gerry) Eichman, Washburn, Wis.; Barbara (Kent) Jacobson, Ettrick, Wis.; Kathy Kujak, Fountain City, Wis.; Bonnie (William) Truax, Galesville, Wis.; Mary (Ray) Schubert, Galesville; Rebecca (Robert) Harris, Trempealeau, Wis.; Sandra (David) Salsman, Ettrick; Michael Smith (Nancy), Trempealeau; Daniel (Paula) Smith, Galesville.

They have 27 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.

The couple owns and operates Brookes Implement in Galesville.
