Divorce Records of Williams County, Ohio 1830 - 1886 Lightfoot, William from Hughes, Mary "Polly" married: 1 September 1830 in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania Journal 7 roll 22 (Mar 1867 - Nov 1871) source: posted on line by the Williams County OGS .
Marriage Notes:
William and Mary Lightfoot were enumerated twice in the 1850 US Census. There are actually two census records for the family of William and Mary Lightfoot within Brady Township, Williams County, Ohio for 1850. Apparently they were enumerated on one location, then moved to a different location and were enumerated there also.
1850 US Census Page 5, Family 78, Roll 741 Brady Township, Williams County, Ohio 29 Aug 1850 William Lightfoot..40..PA..None Mary Lightfoot..36..PA Alexander Lightfoot..11..PA John Lightfoot..9..PA Caroline Lightfoot..7..PA Levi Lightfoot..5..PA Jacob Lightfoot..3..OH Mary Lightfoot..1..OH
NOTE - This first enumeration record includes the name of Mary at age 1 whereas she was excluded on the second enumeration.
The following enumeration occurred just 5 days later and the enumerator was the same person who performed the first enumeration. In this enumeration, the wife's name was listed as Polly instead of Mary.
1850 US Census Page 13A, Family 186, Roll 741 Brady Township, Williams County, Ohio 3 Sep 1850 William Lightfoot..42..PA..Farming Polly Lightfoot..40..PA Alexander Lightfoot..12..PA John Lightfoot..10..PA Caroline Lightfoot..8..PA Levi Lightfoot..6..PA Jacob Lightfoot..3..OH
The name of Levi was entered as Lewis on the second enumeration. Missing from both enumerations are the daughter, Margaret who would have been about 17 years old at the time. Just eight dwellings away from the Lightfoots on the first enumeration in July, there is a Margaret Lightfoot, age 17, living with the Jones family at dwelling 86. It gives her birth location as Pennsylvania and that she is attending school. None of the other children within the Lightfoot family were noted as attending school. Absalam Jones and his wife and all children were born in Ohio. I suspect that this Margaret is the daughter of William and Mary and for some reason was living with the Jones family. I can find no other connection between the Joneses and the Lightfoots. I have yet to locate where the 5 year old Levi could have been. Perhaps he was just overlooked on both enumerations.
It is interesting to note the age differences on the two census records for the same exact family. William is shown as age 40 in the first record but the second one shows his age as 42. His wife, Mary (Polly) is 36 on the first record but 40 on the second. Even Alexander's age is 11 on the first and 12 on the second. Jacob's age is the only one that is consistent at age 3. This should be a good lesson for researchers to NOT rely on census ages for determining ages. Sometimes the census information is given by a neighbor or close friend and not necessarily by the exact family members. ----------------------------------------

Divorce Action in Williams County, Ohio - Lightfoot Mary Hughes Lightfoot v. William Lightfoot (Journal 7, p.433 - 17 May 1870; Roll 22, case number 13 - May 1870)
By Pamela Pattison Lash (updated 2010)
Mary charged William with extreme cruelty, gross neglect, and habitual drunkenness for more than twenty-five years. She told the court that the couple had seven children but Lydia was the only minor. William would get drunk whenever he could; for more than twenty years he neglected and refused to supply her with food, clothing, or shelter. He threatened her by carrying a concealed weapon and often told her he would kill her. He beat and choked her on occasion. Sixteen years ago he put her life in great peril and she sought refuge elsewhere with daughter Lydia, an infant at the time. She brought the following witnesses to substantial her claims: M/M Joseph Lantz, Henry Tuttle, and Moses Shoemaker. A divorce was granted.
Mary Lightfoot died on 12 Feb 1889 at the age of 78Y 3M 6D in Williams County (Deaths V2 p49) and was buried in the Lockport Cemetery beside her granddaughter Ada Luella Rittenour. Nothing further is known of William ----------------------------------------------- 10
