bullet  General Notes:

At least one researcher, including Marjorie Tracy, believes that it was the father, Levi Lightfoot, instead of the son, Edward Levi Lightfoot, who married Sarah Holden in Henderson County, Illinois in 1866. But the 1870 US Census shows the son living with a possible wife named Sarah in Des Moines County, Iowa while the father was enumerated as still living with his 2nd wife, Edna, back in LaSalle County, Illinois. Therefore it seems logical that it was the young son who was married to Sarah A. Holden in 1866 and not the father who may have taken on an additional wife. The young son and wife, Sarah Holden, continued their westward move into Des Moines County, Iowa where they were enumerated in 1870. The father and his wife, Edna, moved from Illinois to Des Moines County, Iowa sometime between 1870 and 1880.

One article in the above publications was authored by Keith A. Erekson & Lloyd D. Newell, entitled "A Gathering Place for the Scandinavian People": Conversion, Retention, and Gathering in Norway, Illinois (1842'96 1849)",

On Saturday, 18 May (1844), Elders Woodruff and Smith presided at a conference held in nearby Newark, Kendall County. First, representation of the eight attending branches was called for, and Ole Heier reported for the La Salle Branch the presence of forty-six members and two elders. It was the largest branch represented at the conference, which had 133 members and ten elders in attendance. Then, four elders, a priest, and a teacher were ordained unto their new offices under the hands of Elders W. Woodruff, G. A. Smith, and Ezra Thayer; and instructions were given according to their priesthood duties.27

from Marjorie R. Tracy:
The only information I have about Levi prior to his marrying Anna was that he was an ordained Mormon minister, and was a member of the same community as her family. "The Sloopers" book specifically pointed to Levi as being "short with black hair, of English extraction, and coming from Pennsylvania Dutch country. He and Anna remained married until her death in 1865. Around 1870, after his children were grown, Levi remarried and was a coffin-maker in Chicago, until the Great Chicago fire destroyed his business in 1871. By 1872, he was in Burlington, Iowa.

April 2003:
In looking at the Slooper book (which has the majority of source material), Levi Lightfoot was living and working in Chicago in 1871 after his wife was gone, and his children grown. By 1872, he had moved to Burlington, if that's any help. By 1891, Levi moved to Omaha to be with his younger children, and died on the first day of the twentieth century, then buried in the South Omaha Cemetery.

bullet  Birth Notes:

Even though his gravestone indicates a birth date of 13 Mar 1818, most of his census records provide an age that references a birth year of 1815.

• He has alternate birth date of 13 March 1815 and a birth location of Pennsylvania.

This birth year was referenced by his age of 35 on the 1850 census. Also by his age of 45 on the 1860 census. Also by his age of 55 on the 1870 census.

• He has alternate birth date of 13 March 1816 and a birth location of Franklin, PA.

• He has alternate birth date of 1820 and a birth location of Pennsylvania.

bullet  Marriage Notes:

from Marjorie R. Tracy:
Levi and his family were living in Burlington, Des Moines County, Iowa in 1880. The only exceptions were daughters Caroline, who was single, working as a dressmaker in La Salle, Illinois, and Inger "Emma Lide" Eliza Lightfoot and husband, Burdette Spencer, who had moved back east and were living in Elmira, New York. Levi was married twice after Susan. In addition to the children mentioned in the letter, he had Georgiana H., Alma, Katie, Frank, Lotta, and Bessie.

bullet  Marriage Notes:

There is a tantalizing marriage record coming from Porter County, Indiana that shows a Levi Lightfoot marrying Edna Hathaway on 27 Jun 1867. There were several other Lightfoot relatives living in Porter County, Indiana at the time and one might be lead to believe that Levi Edward Lightfoot might have traveled to Porter County, Indiana to visit relatives and he ended up getting married there.

However, a close examination of all the documents show that the Levi in Porter County was most likely Levi B. Lightfoot who was born in 1840 in Ohio and that Levi and his parents had moved to Kosciusko County, Indiana. The bride's name was shown only as Edna Hathaway. It is known from census records that the name of that Levi's wife name was Hannah E. (unknown). Therefore, it may be possible that his bride's full name was Hannah Edna Hathaway but the records are unclear about that.
